A LITTLE ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS …
Comprehending the science of curing diseases, doctors carefully recorded their symptoms, calculated the causes of their own failures. So, statistics reported that in the twentieth century, especially in its second half, there were much more diseases that were almost not known before. We are talking primarily about atherosclerosis – the cause of strokes and heart attacks, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, autoimmune, neurological and mental illnesses (of course, including those that have not been fully studied to this day, but are no less destructive for the psyche, depression) and many other, equally common and equally well-known health disorders.
Why this happened is more or less clear. Firstly, the emergence of new diseases is due to a change in the human environment on Earth and, above all, environmental degradation in places of mass residence of people polluted by industrial emissions of substances harmful to a living organism. For example, researchers who have observed the primitive tribes of America and New Guinea for a long time, invariably note the almost absolute absence of the majority of civilized diseases among the natives.
Secondly, – this is a continuation of the first paragraph, – the composition and quality of food consumed has changed significantly. We began to eat much more sweet, fatty, canned food, in our diet there were unacceptably few fresh products. Chronic lack of vitamins, minerals and other vital substances has changed the body, made it vulnerable to ailments. In addition, pharmacological drugs, having side effects, often themselves provoked new health problems.
Naturally, there could be no question of their preventive use. In the end, more and more doctors began to think about the question: are we on the right track? Maybe we should not just attack the disease with all the power of modern pharmacology, but focus our efforts on restoring the normal balance in the body and allow it to deal with it on its own? And even better – to reach a state where the risk of getting sick with something becomes minimal.
And then the appeal to dietary supplements (biologically active food supplements) became inevitable. Supplements are natural, natural substances that actively affect the causes and mechanisms that cause a person to have a disease state.
In fairness, it should be recognized that even among physicians there is still a negative attitude to dietary supplements from restrained distrust to complete denial. In our country – much more often, which is not surprising: the West began and survived the vitamin revolution two decades ago; dietary supplements began to appear in the CIS relatively recently, we do not have our own medical experience in their use.
There are several reasons for this, but the first of them is the old official ideas about how much and what vitamins a statistically average person has consumed in flesh and blood. Oddly enough, some of the experts are now convinced that a person in abundance is able to get all the necessary vitamins and minerals from ordinary food. The daily diet, composed entirely of fresh products, lacks the most important vitamins and trace elements for the reason that over the past century their content in plants has decreased. The composition of soils and precipitation has changed. One way or another, to maintain health, an additional intake of nutraceuticals is absolutely necessary.
The great Linus Polling at one time generally expressed a paradoxical, at first glance, statement that we all live in a state of chronic scurvy – a lack of vitamin C, which the body needs constantly because we ourselves do not produce it and are not able to accumulate it.
As for the so-called, recommended and maximum doses of vitamins, everything is even simpler. The fact is that the recommended dose is the minimum amount of vitamins without which a person can not do at all. Such doses cannot provide a lasting prophylactic or curative effect, of course. Russian official science today also recognizes this statement as quite fair.
In one of his articles, the head of the laboratory of vitamins and minerals of the Institute of Nutrition, corresponding member of RAMS, professor V. Spirichev cited safe levels of vitamin intake. So, the daily intake of vitamins A and D can be increased 10 times against the recommended one without the slightest fear; vitamins B6 and K – 50 times; folic acid, B1, beta-carotene – 100 times; vitamins B2, B12, C, E – 1000 times! It was this thesis that almost forty years ago was put forward and brilliantly proved by Linus Polling as an example of his own life.
There is another reason for the distrust of physicians in dietary supplements; Polling spoke about it at one time. Modern medicine is so complicated that almost every doctor is forced to become a narrow specialist in his field. Often he has neither the time nor the opportunity to follow the achievements of related sciences, in particular biochemistry and molecular biology.
